For the better part of three decades multidisciplinary artist Guy Laramee has worked as a stage writer, director, composer, a fabricator of musical instruments, a singer, sculptor, painter and writer. Among his sculptural works are two incredible series of carved book landscapes and structures entitled Biblios and The Great Wall, where the dense pages of old books are excavated to reveal serene mountains, plateaus, and ancient structures.

A bit from the artist himself:

So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills. Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.

For an installation at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, artist Yayoi Kusama made a totally white room and gave colored dot stickers to all the visiting children and let them stick them wherever they wanted. It’s a color explosion!

The Kai Table designed by Naoki Hirakoso and Takmitsu Kitahara is all about surprises, as it’s constructed almost entirely of secret compartments. From sliding drawers and hinged cupboards, to a number of shifting panels, the entire piece is built like an elaborate wooden puzzle.

What do you do with a spare World War II biplane engine? Make it into a functional art like this coffee table. Currently on display at Decoratum Gallery in London, the Cylinder Radial Engine Table is made from a US Army Boeing-Stearman PT-13 engine acquired from the Canadian Museum of Flight, Langley, British Columbia. Constructed between 1936 and 1938, the innovative piece features a simple clear glass top so you can see through to the complex engine workings below.

Bacterioptica is a one-of-a-kind chandelier designed by MADLAB. The chandelier is made of Petri dishes, metal rods and 15,000 feet of fiber optics.

Artist Kyle Bean made this chicken completely out of eggshells. It’s a humorous interpretation of the age old question, “What came first? The chicken or the egg?” Be sure to check out Kyle’s other work at his website.
